Highway 407 Road Safety Review
Our Chief Road Safety Engineer and Principal, Dr. John Robinson, P.Eng. chaired a six person team of Canadian experts in highway design and safety, assembled to conduct a safety review of a 34 km section of Highway 407, a new 6-lane all electronic toll highway, being implemented in the Metropolitan Toronto area. The team, which functioned as a Committee of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario, was assembled in response to a number of criticisms of the safety of the privately developed highway, particularly related to the use of appropriate engineering standards in the design of the highway. The team reviewed preliminary and final design plans and related background information, interviewed various stakeholders in the project, conducted limited field surveys and prepared a report outlining the findings. The report indicated that there were no serious safety deficiencies in the highway and that it was essentially designed and constructed to present day standards, but the report identified a number of measures that could be implemented to improve the safety of the highway.
