FHWA Office of SafetyThe FHWA Office of Safety's principle focus is on reducing the number and severity of crashes that occur through highway engineering. This site includes links to valuable reference materials on the development, testing and implementation of technologies and procedures to improve the physical safety of roadway infrastructure. Institute of Transportation EngineersThe Institute of Transportation Engineers is an international educational and scientific association of transportation professionals who are responsible for meeting mobility and safety needs. ITE facilitates the application of technology and scientific principles to research, planning, functional design, implementation, operation, policy development and management for any mode of transportation. Through its products and services, ITE promotes professional development of its members, supports and encourages education, stimulates research, develops public awareness programs and serves as a conduit for the exchange of professional information. The Canadian chapter of ITE can be found at www.cite7.org. Institute of Transportation EngineersITE has developed a program and a web-based tool that estimates the number of fatalities and crashes nationally (in the aggregate) as of this day and time (e.g., real time projection of fatalities and crashes). The projection is based on an algorithm that considers the USA 5-Year Rolling Average for fatalities and crashes. National Transportation Safety BoardThe National Transportation Safety Board is an independent Federal agency charged by the US Congress with investigating every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant accidents in the other modes of transportation -- railroad, highway, marine and pipeline -- and issuing safety recommendations aimed at preventing future accidents. PDF versions of recent studies and accident reports prepared by the NTSB are available on this site. PlanetizenPlanetizen has emerged as the preeminent source of planning-related news for North American practitioners. It is "a one-stop source for urban planning news, commentary, interviews, event coverage, book reviews, announcements, jobs, consultant listings, training, and more. Planetizen is read by a diverse array of people interested in the built and natural environments, and their interaction." Road Safety ResearchThis is a website maintained by Dr. Ezra Hauer, Canada's leading road safety expert. The website contains articles and related material dealing with road safety issues that Dr. Hauer has published over the years and is particularly valuable to those looking to develop a deeper understanding of road safety engineering technical and research issues.
SafetyAnalystThis website provides information on the ongoing US R&D effort to develop a suite of tools for explicit and quantitative road safety analysis called SafetyAnalyst. A number of excellent documents are already available on this website, and others are added as portions of the research are completed. The SafetyAnalyst toolkit will include six software programs to help transportation agencies analyze the safety performance of specific sites, suggest appropriate countermeasures, quantify their expected benefits, and evaluate their effectiveness. The Online TDM EncyclopediaThe Online TDM Encyclopedia, maintained by Todd Litman of Victoria, BC, is an assemblage of travel demand management information and strategies for urban situations. As noted on the website, the encyclopedia "is a comprehensive source of information about innovative management solutions to transportation problems. It provides detailed information on dozens of demand management strategies, plus general information on TDM planning and evaluation techniques." Its all good and its all free! Transportation Research BoardThe mission of the Transportation Research Board -- one of six major divisions of the National Research Council -- is to promote innovation and progress in transportation through research. In an objective and interdisciplinary setting, the Board facilitates the sharing of information on transportation practice and policy by researchers and practitioners; stimulates research and offers research management services that promote technical excellence; provides expert advice on transportation policy and programs; and disseminates research results broadly and encourages their implementation.
